The importance of gut flora.
Your body contains upwards of 100 trillion bacteria at any given moment. That’s 10X more bacteria than you have human cells… you are (from a quantity perspective) more bacteria than you are human. Almost 6lbs worth of that bacteria lives in your gut, and considering that aside from your skin, the gut is your first line of defense to external environmental and nutritional toxins, it would be a good idea for your health to keep your gut flora in check.
In the video above, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride author of “Gut and Psychology syndrome” covers the role of gut flora in the body and why it’s beneficial to your health to make sure the right bacteria are living and thriving in your gut. In her book “Gut and Psychology syndrome” Dr. Campbell poses that there is growing evidence that gut flora plays a significant roll in the health of your brain, and more specifically the function of your blood-brain barrier. Studies are showing direct links to pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) such as autistic disorder (classic autism), Asperger syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and Rett syndrome and improper gut function, as a highly significant number of PDD present with abnormal gut flora.
How does the average person maintain and restore a healthy gut?
- Remove all food toxins from your diet. (Cereal grains, soy, industrial seed oils, sugar
- Eat plenty of fermentable fibers. (sweet potatoes, yucca root, etc.,)
- Eat fermented foods (sauerkraut, kim chi, or yoghurt).
- Treat any intestinal pathogens (such as parasites) that may be present.
- Take steps to manage your stress.

Peak Moment – The vegetarian myth.
Please watch the WHOLE video below!
Lierre Keith has such an eloquent way of describing so many of the problems with our modern food system. As a strict vegan, Lierre gave herself irreversible health problems directly attributed to her idealistic diet choice of the time. She is now a major advocate of real food eating, and following the guidelines laid out for us by our ancestors.
She really sees the big picture, and reading her book The Vegetarian Myth, especially if you have daughters, is highly recommended, whether you’re a vegetarian or not. Open minds open doors.

Apparently it’s muscle-up week at RAWCF?
Unbeknownst to RAWCF coaches, this has unofficially become the week of the muscle-up. Check out the videos below to see not 1, not 2, but 3 athletes hit their first muscle-ups (2 of the 3 are in the same family… I guess the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree).

Words of wisdom from Will Smith
Key points to take away from this video:
Yes, you CAN!!!:
Though we deal mostly with the physical body at RAW, the successes that you achieve inside the box have very real application to your everyday life (both physically and psychologically). If there is one thing that I hope you take away from your time at RAW CrossFit it’s that
YOU CAN
do anything. If you can envision it in your mind, it is possible. You CAN lift that weight. You CAN keep running. You CAN jump on that high box. You can, you can, you can…. RAW is the place where you remove “I can’t” from your life.
Skill vs. Talent:
Everyone has a talent for something, but if you are not willing to put in the hours of hard work to develop that talent, you are wasting it. The key point here is
Mastery
: Being uncommonly skilled at a common task. Mastery is the reason I ride you guys about range of motion, proper technique, and making sure you are completing your reps to standard.
My hope is that you will come to understand that this is the KEY to long-term success. You should never settle for a half-assed attempt.
Perfect practice makes perfect.
Where you are now is not where you are going to be forever:
Living in the now is important, but it is a common misconception of being “present”, that you will get stuck where you are currently. The power of living “in the now” is that you are able to make the best decision that your current moment requires. Applied to your time in the gym, you should treat each rep/round/lift/WOD as merely a stepping stone to a greater goal, but you should always try your best at that moment. It is common wisdom that where you end up is less important than how you got there. The journey is more important than the destination. The same theory applies to your work in the gym. Many of you have already seen huge improvements, and while each WOD is hard at the time, when you return the next week, you are a little stronger, and you endurance is a little higher, and your recovery time is a little less. Each tiny improvement gets you that much closer to your goal. As Will says: It’s not about building a wall. It’s about laying each brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid, and eventually you will have a perfect wall.
